kiting

Flying tethered toys

Kiting has several meanings united by the image of something flying or floating.

In banking, kiting is writing checks against insufficient funds, exploiting the delay before they clear: He was arrested for check kiting.

In gaming, kiting is a combat tactic of attacking enemies while staying just out of their reach, leading them around like a kite on a string.

The word also simply describes flying a kite.
