debuff

Temporary character handicap

In video games, a debuff is a negative effect applied to a character that weakens their abilities, slows their movement, or otherwise hampers their performance.

It is the opposite of a buff, which enhances abilities.

As a verb, to debuff means to apply such an effect: The mage debuffed the boss before we attacked.

The term has spread beyond gaming to describe anything that diminishes someone's effectiveness or energy: This hangover is a serious debuff.
