kilocalorie
Dietary energy unit
A kilocalorie is a unit of energy equal to 1,000 calories, used primarily in nutrition to measure the energy content of food.
What food labels in the United States call "calories" are technically kilocalories: A banana has about 100 kilocalories.
Scientists abbreviate it kcal to distinguish it from the smaller calorie used in chemistry and physics.
