jet streams
High-altitude wind currents
Jet streams are narrow bands of fast-moving air currents high in the atmosphere, typically flowing west to east.
They form at boundaries between air masses of different temperatures and significantly influence weather patterns below.
Aircraft traveling with the jet stream save fuel and time; those flying against it face headwinds.
The polar jet stream dipped south, bringing arctic air to the midwest.
