island-hop

Visit successive landmasses

Island-hop means to travel among a series of islands, stopping at several in succession rather than staying at one.

The term originated with World War II military strategy in the Pacific, where forces captured islands progressively toward Japan.

Now it usually describes vacation travel: We spent two weeks island-hopping through Greece.

Also used figuratively for any sequential movement through clustered destinations.
