deme

Local gene pool

A deme is a local population of organisms of one species that actively interbreed with one another and share a distinct gene pool.

In ecology and evolutionary biology, demes are the basic units of population genetics: The island's isolation allowed each deme to develop unique adaptations.

The term also refers to a subdivision of ancient Attica or modern Greece, a local administrative district.
