directedness

Having an aim

Directedness is the quality of being aimed toward something—a goal, object, or purpose.

In philosophy, it describes how mental states point at things beyond themselves: a belief is always a belief *about* something, a desire is always a desire *for* something.

More generally, directedness suggests focus and intentionality: The directedness of her ambition impressed everyone.

The word contrasts with aimlessness or diffusion.
