inkblots
Psychological test shapes
Inkblots are irregular shapes made by ink, especially the symmetrical patterns used in psychological testing.
The Rorschach test presents standardized inkblots and asks subjects what they see, supposedly revealing aspects of personality or mental state.
Outside clinical settings, inkblot has become shorthand for any ambiguous stimulus onto which people project their own interpretations: The candidate's vague platform was an inkblot—voters saw whatever they wanted.
