injunctions

Legally binding directives

Injunctions are court orders that require someone to do something or stop doing something.

A judge might issue an injunction to halt construction on a disputed property or prevent a former employee from sharing trade secrets.

The term also applies more broadly to any authoritative command or directive: Despite her mother's injunctions against staying out late, she went to the party anyway.
