inchworms

Small measuring caterpillars

Inchworms are the caterpillars of geometer moths, named for their distinctive looping movement—they anchor their front legs, pull their rear end forward into an arch, then extend forward again, as if measuring the ground inch by inch.

They're also called measuring worms or loopers.

The inchworm made its way across the leaf in tiny loops.
