ice sheets
Greenland's frozen cover
Ice sheets are vast expanses of glacial ice covering more than 50,000 square kilometers of land.
Only two exist today: the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets.
These massive formations hold most of Earth's fresh water and their melting significantly affects global sea levels.
During ice ages, ice sheets covered much larger portions of the continents.
