eskers
Serpentine gravel formations
Eskers are long, winding ridges of gravel and sand deposited by meltwater streams that flowed beneath or through glaciers.
As glaciers retreated, these sediment-filled tunnels remained as elevated landforms snaking across the landscape.
Eskers can stretch for miles and are common in formerly glaciated regions like Scandinavia and Canada: We hiked along the esker through the bog.
