hyperboloids

Doubly curved shapes

Hyperboloids are three-dimensional surfaces generated by rotating a hyperbola around one of its axes.

In mathematics, they come in two types: the hyperboloid of one sheet, which resembles a cooling tower or hourglass waist, and the hyperboloid of two sheets, which forms two separate curved surfaces facing each other.

The distinctive shape appears in architecture and engineering, where hyperboloid structures provide strength with minimal material: The power plant's cooling towers are hyperboloids.
