seed starting
Indoor plant propagation
Seed starting is the process of germinating seeds indoors before transplanting seedlings outside.
Gardeners start seeds to extend the growing season, protect tender plants from frost, and give slow-growing varieties a head start: I begin seed starting in February for my tomatoes.
The practice requires controlled conditions—light, warmth, moisture—often using trays, grow lights, or heating mats.
