horsecars

Early urban transit

Horsecars were passenger vehicles on rails drawn by horses, the dominant form of urban public transit before electric streetcars.

The term names both the vehicle and the transit system: The city's horsecar lines ran until 1895.

Now historical, appearing mainly in discussions of 19th-century urban development.
