electric streetcars

Wired public transit

Electric streetcars are rail vehicles that run on tracks embedded in city streets, powered by overhead wires or underground cables.

They were the dominant form of urban transit in the late 19th and early 20th centuries before buses and automobiles largely replaced them.

Many cities have revived streetcar lines as light rail: The electric streetcar runs down the center of the avenue.
