diesel trains
Fuel-burning rail vehicles
Diesel trains are railway vehicles powered by diesel engines rather than steam, electricity, or other fuel sources.
They emerged in the mid-20th century as a more efficient and lower-maintenance alternative to steam locomotives, and they remain common for freight and passenger service on non-electrified lines.
The term covers both diesel-electric locomotives, which use diesel engines to generate electricity for traction motors, and diesel-mechanical units with direct drive systems.
