halftones

Grayscale gradient technique

Halftones are the intermediate shades between the lightest and darkest areas of an image.

In printing and photography, halftone refers to a technique that reproduces continuous-tone images using patterns of dots—larger dots create darker areas, smaller dots create lighter ones.

Look closely at a newspaper photograph and you'll see the halftone dots.

The term also applies to musical intervals of a half step.
