Neither highlights nor shadows
Midtones are the middle values between the lightest and darkest areas of an image.
In photography and digital editing, adjusting midtones affects the bulk of an image's tonal range without altering highlights or shadows: I lifted the midtones to brighten her face without blowing out the sky.
The term appears most often in color correction and printing contexts.
