half volley
Post-bounce ground stroke
A half volley is a stroke in tennis, cricket, or soccer where the ball is struck immediately after it bounces, at the moment it begins rising from the ground.
The timing requires meeting the ball at its lowest point: She caught the half volley perfectly and sent it past the goalkeeper.
As a verb, to half-volley is to play such a stroke.
