groundstroke

Post-bounce tennis swing

A groundstroke is a tennis shot made after the ball has bounced once, as opposed to a volley hit in the air.

Forehands and backhands from the baseline are the most common groundstrokes: She has powerful groundstrokes but struggles at the net.

The term applies in other racket sports as well.
