gulfweed

Floating brown algae

Gulfweed is a brown seaweed that floats in large masses on the open ocean, particularly in the Sargasso Sea of the North Atlantic.

Its fronds bear small air bladders that keep it buoyant.

Also called sargassum.

The ship pushed through thick mats of gulfweed.
