groats

Hulled cereal grains

Groats are hulled, crushed grains—most commonly oats, but also wheat, buckwheat, or barley.

The term refers to grain that has been processed enough to remove the husk but not ground into flour: steel-cut oats are sometimes called oat groats.

Groats cook more slowly than rolled or instant varieties but retain more texture and nutrients.
