escape sequence
Special character command
An escape sequence is a combination of characters that represents something other than its literal appearance—typically a backslash followed by a letter or code.
In programming and text processing, escape sequences produce special characters or effects: \n creates a newline, \t inserts a tab, \" allows a quotation mark inside a quoted string.
The backslash "escapes" the normal interpretation of what follows.
- backslashLeftward-slanting diagonal character
- carriage returnCursor-to-margin command
- lineContinuous mark or queue
- stringSlender fiber or character sequence
- keyLock-opening device
