vi
Modal text editor
Vi is a text editor for Unix-like systems, created in 1976 and still widely used by programmers and system administrators.
It operates in different modes—command mode for navigation and editing commands, insert mode for typing text.
The learning curve is steep, but devotees prize its efficiency: I edited the config file in vi.
The name comes from "visual," distinguishing it from line-based editors that preceded it. (Capitalized VI is the Roman numeral for six.)
