gravestones

Carved memorial slabs

Gravestones are stone markers placed at graves, typically inscribed with the deceased's name, dates of birth and death, and sometimes an epitaph or decorative carving.

The terms gravestone, tombstone, and headstone are largely interchangeable, though headstone specifically marks the head of a grave.

We walked through the old cemetery reading the gravestones.
