gold star mothers

War-fallen's grieving mothers

Gold star mothers are women whose sons or daughters died while serving in the United States military.

The term comes from the custom of displaying a gold star in the window to honor a family member killed in service, in contrast to the blue star indicating someone currently serving.

The Gold Star Mothers gathered at the memorial on Veterans Day.
