gold star families

Fallen soldiers' kin

Gold star families are the immediate relatives of U.S. military personnel who died in service.

The term comes from the gold star displayed in windows during wartime to indicate a family member killed in action, in contrast to the blue star for those currently serving.

The memorial ceremony honored gold star families from the community.
