go-down

Decrease in value

A go-down is a warehouse or storage building, used primarily in South and Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.

The term comes from Malay and appears in contexts involving colonial-era trade: The tea was stored in the go-down near the harbor.

British merchants and administrators adopted the word during the colonial period, and it persists in regional English today.
