giltwood
Gold-leafed carved frame
Giltwood is wood covered with a thin layer of gold or gold-colored material.
The term appears almost exclusively in furniture and decorative arts contexts: a giltwood mirror frame, an 18th-century giltwood console table.
The gilding gives carved wooden pieces the appearance of solid gold at a fraction of the cost.
