untreated wood

Lumber without sealant

Untreated wood is lumber that hasn't been processed with chemicals, stains, or sealants to protect against rot, insects, or weathering.

The term matters most when distinguishing from pressure-treated wood, which contains preservatives: Use untreated wood for raised garden beds so chemicals don't leach into the soil.

Untreated wood weathers naturally but deteriorates faster outdoors.
