lead line
Sailor's depth finder
A lead line is a rope or cable with a weighted end, used to measure water depth by lowering it until the weight touches bottom.
The technique predates electronic depth finders: The sailor cast the lead line and called out the soundings.
In theater, a lead line is a rope sewn into the bottom hem of a curtain to make it hang properly.
In fishing, it refers to line weighted with lead to sink bait or lures deeper.
