newt

Small tailed amphibian

A newt is a small salamander that spends part of its life in water and part on land.

Newts have moist skin and slender bodies, returning to ponds to breed.

They appear in folklore as witches' ingredients and in modern culture as the amphibian Gingrich jokes inevitably reference.

The pond was full of newts in spring. (Capitalized Newt is a given name, short for Newton.)
