grunts

Low effort noises

Grunts are short, low sounds made with effort or minimal communication—the noise of physical exertion, acknowledgment without words, or animal vocalizations.

Pigs grunt.

So do people lifting heavy objects or responding noncommittally: He answered with a grunt.

In military slang, a grunt is an infantry soldier—someone doing the hard, unglamorous work on the ground.

The term extends to any low-level worker: corporate grunts.
