fungible

Freely exchangeable units

Fungible describes things that are interchangeable because individual units are identical in value or function.

One dollar bill is fungible with any other dollar bill.

Commodities like wheat or oil are fungible—a barrel from one source equals a barrel from another.

In legal and financial contexts, fungibility allows substitution without loss: The stolen funds were fungible with legitimate deposits.

The opposite is non-fungible, recently popularized by NFTs (non-fungible tokens), which are unique digital assets.
