redundant
More than necessary
Redundant describes something that exceeds what is necessary or useful.
A redundant word adds nothing to meaning; a redundant employee is no longer needed.
In engineering, redundant systems provide backup: The plane has redundant controls in case the primary system fails.
British usage favors redundant for layoffs: She was made redundant when the factory closed.
