coonskin

Tailed cap material

A coonskin is the pelt of a raccoon, or a cap made from one—typically with the tail hanging down the back.

The coonskin cap became iconic through American frontier mythology: Davy Crockett in his coonskin cap.

The word is simply a compound of coon (raccoon) and skin, unrelated to the racial slur.
