free climber
Unroped rock ascender
A free climber is someone who climbs rock faces using only their hands, feet, and body—no mechanical aids for upward progress.
Ropes and protection may be used to catch falls, but not to assist the climb itself.
The term distinguishes this style from aid climbing, where gear helps the climber ascend: She's a free climber who has summited some of the world's most challenging routes.
