fluter

Decorative groove maker

A fluter is a person or tool that makes flutes—not the instrument, but the decorative grooves cut into columns, furniture, or fabric.

An architect might specify fluting on classical columns; a fluter creates those parallel channels.

The word also occasionally names a flute player, though flutist and flautist are far more common for that sense.
