études

Technical training compositions

Études are musical compositions designed primarily as technical exercises, intended to develop a performer's skill on an instrument.

The term is French for "studies." While many études serve purely pedagogical purposes, some—particularly those by Chopin and Liszt—are demanding concert pieces that combine technical challenge with artistic expression: She practiced her Chopin études for hours.
