sonatas
Multi-movement instrumental works
Sonatas are extended musical compositions, typically for one or two instruments, structured in multiple movements with contrasting tempos and themes.
The form dominated classical music from the Baroque period onward: Beethoven's piano sonatas, a violin sonata by Mozart.
The related term sonata form describes a specific structural pattern within movements.
