sabot

Carved peasant footwear

A sabot is a wooden shoe carved from a single block, traditionally worn by peasants in France and other parts of Europe.

The word extends to any shoe with a thick wooden sole.

In military contexts, a sabot is a lightweight casing that holds a projectile inside a gun barrel, falling away after firing to let the narrower round fly faster: sabot rounds, armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot.
