flag planting
Marking conquered ground
Flag planting is the act of staking a claim—making a visible declaration of ownership, priority, or position.
The image comes from explorers literally planting flags on newly reached territory.
Now it's mostly figurative: a researcher publishes early findings to establish priority, or someone makes a bold statement to mark their stance: This is just flag planting—he hasn't done the real work yet.
The term often carries a whiff of performative possession over genuine accomplishment.
