fire base
Forward military installation
A fire base is a military outpost designed to provide artillery support for infantry operations.
The term became prominent during the Vietnam War, when American forces established these temporary or semi-permanent positions throughout the countryside: Firebase Alpha took mortar fire all night.
Fire bases typically combined defensive fortifications with heavy weapons capable of supporting troops operating in surrounding areas.
