rear area
Space in back
In military usage, a rear area is the zone behind the front lines where combat support activities occur—supply depots, medical facilities, command posts, and reserve forces.
Troops in the rear area face less immediate danger than those at the front: He spent most of his deployment in the rear area.
The term contrasts with forward positions where active fighting takes place.
