epicondylitis

Inflamed elbow bump

Epicondylitis is inflammation where tendons attach to the bony bumps (epicondyles) on either side of the elbow.

Tennis elbow affects the outer epicondyle from repetitive gripping and wrist extension; golfer's elbow affects the inner epicondyle.

Despite the names, most cases come from occupational strain rather than sports: The carpenter developed epicondylitis from years of hammering.
