encodings

Character mapping schemes

Encodings are systems for representing information in a particular format.

In computing, character encodings like UTF-8 or ASCII map text characters to numerical values: The page displayed garbage because of mismatched encodings.

More broadly, an encoding is any scheme that translates one form of data into another—how the brain encodes memories, how DNA encodes genetic information.
