AES

Symmetric block cipher

AES stands for Advanced Encryption Standard, a widely used specification for encrypting electronic data.

Adopted by the U.S. government in 2001, it replaced the older DES standard and is now ubiquitous in securing everything from Wi-Fi networks to financial transactions: AES-256 encryption. (Lowercase aes is a Latin term for bronze.)
