hardware abstraction
Component-agnostic interface layer
Hardware abstraction is a layer of software that shields programs from the specific details of underlying hardware.
Instead of writing code for each particular processor, graphics card, or storage device, programmers write to the abstraction layer, which translates their commands for whatever hardware is actually present.
This allows the same software to run on different machines without modification: The operating system's hardware abstraction layer handles communication with the printer.
