save state
Frozen game moment
A save state is a snapshot of a program's exact condition at a specific moment, allowing the user to return to that point later.
The term comes from video game emulators, where players can save their progress at any instant—not just at designated checkpoints: I made a save state right before the boss fight.
The concept extends to virtual machines and other software that can freeze and restore their complete state.
